This project was a surprise and completely unexpected. My husband wanted to make my work from home space a bit more inviting and organized. Since, we had fun creating our TV Surround in the living he thought we could tackle this built-in project, too. We did a quick sketch to see what might work for the space and thene we were off to pick up supplies.
((I’m going to have to search for a before picture. We built this on a solid wall in one of the bedrooms we turned into an office.))
Let’s get started! We took the same approach we did in our TV surround project. We build half a shelf/tower. fit it in place and get it anchored to the wall and ceiling.
Once it was secured the other side is added. It’s attached at the shelving with wood screws.
We repeated our steps and created a similar shelf/tower for the other side. There’s going to be tons of storage!
Now that the towers are in place we were able to cut the shelves to size. They were easy to install and we set them with screws from the inside of the towers.
We built a second cubby to go behind the desk to make the most of the space.
The cubby is installed. We attached it to the wall and the tower on the side.
We added some doors to the towers. The length was cut in half to make them more manageable. The panels were trimmed with some flat 1″ pieces of wood to give it some texture.
The doors are up and the hardware is on. The side section is a gap with two poles. We added this for my sewing and fabric projects
Next it is time to start sanding, filling and painting. This part felt like it was never going to end! But getting it properly prepped makes a big difference. My base coat was 2 layers of Killz.
I painted the cabinet the same white that the baseboard and window frames are in the room. The light gray on the wall I left behind the shelves. I also added an accent color behind the desk area above the cubby.Ta Da!
Here is the completed project! The poles on the side worked out perfect for fabric. The towers with the doors definitely help to hide all my work and crafting supplies. Overall, the built in really transformed this into an organized office space.
Hope you enjoyed seeing the project come together and thanks for checking out my blog 🙂
