I know hopeless Heavenly at Lake Tahoe sounds harsh for one of the top ski resorts in America. People rave about the slope, views and atmosphere. Well, let me tell you we saw none of that! I am genuinely not a critic. I’ve worked in multiple customer service fields and nothing sucks more than a consumer who can’t be pleased. So, that is my disclaimer.
We are both off this weekend and super excited to head to the mountains. We load up our gear and stop at the closest Dutch Bros., then onward to Heavenly! A couple hours later and we are here. What we didn’t do was call to see if they were open. Unfortunately, a storm had come in and damaged some of their power lines affecting the lifts and gondola. The mountain was closed for a day or two. So, here we go.. a couple hours back home.
This time we got a hotel and spent the night on the lake. Not only did we bring all our gear we even packed our puppy, Cali. (Yes, we get points for creativity with her name). After a good night’s rest we head to find parking and get ready for the gondola ride up. The line is worse than Disney’s, but at least we were not baking in the heat. Finally, we’re heading up!
What started as blue skies turned grey by the time we got on the mountain. It became blistering cold (we ended up with wind burn), the lines for lifts were very long, and the trails were ice. Thank God we had helmets. I hit an awful spot and slammed my head. I almost knocked myself out! After NOT enjoying our time we went inside to get some food and warm up. Not a single seat to be found. The café/food court was chaotic! After standing and eating along the wall while people tried to squeeze through we thought we’d give the slope another try. WRONG! We didn’t realize how early the slope closed. So we head back to the gondola to go back to town. However, since it was close to closing time this causes an a·poc·a·lyp·tic line that made the previous lines look like nothing! Swarms of people were forced to funnel into a channel to get back on one lift to get of the mountain.
Our attempt at Heavenly was hopeless. I am only giving it 3 out of 5 snowflakes ❄️❄️❄️
I would give it 2, but I’m trying to be opened minded that the shock of lines and the frigid grey haze skewed my opinion. The next day was stunning and maybe had we enjoyed this weather on Heavenly it wouldn’t have been hopeless…
